Justin Allen is an architect based in Berlin, originally from Upstate New York. He co-founded ALLEN KAUFMANN ARCHITEKTEN with Saskia Kaufmann, a practice working across Projects, Objects, and Subjects with a focus on material intelligence, spatial clarity, and construction logic that remains legible. In 2026, the studio’s project Signa Sports United High Rise Tower received ArchDaily Building of the Year (Interior Architecture). His work is shaped by urban context, suburbia, and natural landscapes, and by close collaboration with craftspeople, fabricators, and clients.

Allen holds a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and a Master’s degree in Architecture. He began his career at Steven Holl Architects in New York City before relocating to Berlin, where he has worked with firms including von Gerkan, Marg und Partner, Barkow Leibinger, and Ralph Appelbaum Associates. Informed by a background in tool-and-die work and the building trades, he maintains a hands-on approach to design and fabrication.

Allen is the inventor of a patented wood joinery system developed for the DADO series and continues to develop DT (dovetail) work and new prototypes through ALLEN KAUFMANN OBJECTS (AKO). His work has included public installation rights for “3M Konstellation” at Park am Nordbahnhof (with Adel Motamedi), invited lectures, and academic appointments including a visiting professorship at the University of Oregon. Selected object work has been featured in publications including Wallpaper and NZZ. Allen is a licensed architect with the Architektenkammer Berlin.

Saskia Kaufmann is a Berlin-based architect and a Berlin native. She holds a Master’s degree in Architecture from the Universität der Künste (UdK), where she also worked as a teaching assistant under Professor Michael Bollé. During her studies she collaborated on fashion and design projects, worked in architectural practice, and completed an extended internship in New York City.

Before co-founding ALLEN KAUFMANN ARCHITEKTEN, Kaufmann worked in New York and Berlin on interior and architectural projects, including hospitality, cultural, and public-sector contexts. Her experience spans concept development through execution, with a particular focus on spatial atmosphere, material decisions, and the practical realities of building. Her work also places strong emphasis on color—how tone, light, and surface finish shape perception and use.

In 2014, Kaufmann co-founded ALLEN KAUFMANN ARCHITEKTEN with Justin Allen. The practice works across Projects, Objects, and Subjects, integrating art, fabrication, and custom elements into architecture and design. In 2026, the studio’s project Signa Sports United High Rise Tower received ArchDaily Building of the Year (Interior Architecture). Kaufmann’s work is shaped by Berlin’s urban conditions and by close collaboration with clients, craftspeople, and fabricators.

Kaufmann is a licensed architect with the Architektenkammer Berlin and has served as a guest reviewer in academic settings. Selected studio work has been featured in publications and exhibitions.
